Requirements for application

Many thanks for considering an application to the Max Planck Graduate Center. Here we will provide basic information about pre-conditions, eligibility and the application process.

After at least four years of studies in natural science with excellent marks you hold now the degree of a master. You are interested in one of our research fields (please follow the link!) and you explain your motiviation for this field based on your so far experience in your application.

You provide us with the full set of the following documents:

 

Personal:

Curriculum Vitae with photo

Exposé:

Letter of motivation and own knowlegde concerning the planned research project and future goals. Please refer in this part to one of the MPGC research fields and explain your qualification for and interest in this field (not more than 4 pages).

Certificates:

Originals or certified copies of study certificates including all marks, either in an English or in a German version / translation. (Please do not send originals as hard copy!)

Language skills:

Proof of English language skills for non-native speakers (official tests, e.g. TOEFL or German Abitur), see also website "language skills"

Recommendations:

Two letters of recommendation from two independent referees

 

 

Applying from abroad you may send these documents first in an electronic version (PDF) via E-mail. Please note, that we cannot respond, if the documents are not complete.
After acceptance of your documents a statement of a local supervisor eligible for the MPGC is necessary, that he or she will care about your research project. See website "Advisory Group". The MPGC team will support you in this step.

 

Process of graduation at the MPGC

Three sorts of enrolment in the MPGC are possible in various combinations:

  • You participate in the program of the MPGC.
  • You aim to graduate according to the regulations of the MPGC following its program.
  • You aim to be financially supported from MPGC funds during your PhD time.

Financial support is possible as contract or stipend and will be granted according to the general rules of the respective MPGC partner.

Doctoral students of the MPGC are awarded after their successful defense with a joint PhD certificate of the Max Planck Society and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Therefore, you are not only admitted by the MPGC but also approved by the universities foreign office (see website "application at university").

Participants into the MPGC program can receive a certificate from the MPGC additionally to the PhD certificate.

Applications to the MPGC are possible at any time, irrespective of whether an open position is currently indicated on this website.
