The Focus Group „Modern Bone Tissue Engineering” combines two major fields of the MPGC: Materials Chemistry and Medicine. Furthermore, medical needs are identified in collaboration with the group BiomaTiCS (Biomaterials, Tissues and Cells in Science) at the University Medicine Mainz.
Replacement of injured tissues or organs with synthetic materials or implants became widely used. The amount of implants brought into humans is constantly increasing each year. We focus on the issues involved in implants in conjunction with bone formation, mainly in large bone defects. For these purposes novel man-made “biomaterials” need to be designed and investigated which have to fulfill several critical demands: they must be biocompatible and either biodegradable or biodurable. Bone forming cells need to grow on these bone or even better bone forming stem cells need to be expanded and differentiated on these materials. In this context growth factors and differentiation factors are important to be delivered. Also aspects of the extracellular matrix and its influence on the cell fate and growth are investigated. Tissue formation always needs vascularization as well as absence of bacteria which have a high tendency to colonize foreign materials.
Researchers from the MPIP and the JGU (del Campo, Wurm, Landfester, Munoz-Espi, Tremel) design novel biomimetic and biodegradable inorganic and polymeric materials for tissue engineering. As such a major project employs novel synthetic pathways for phosphorus-containing polyesters decorating calcium apatite microstructures which will be investigated in the University Medicine for their application in bone regeneration on relevant differentiated cell preparations and also in animals. The clinic is represented by the groups of Bilal Al-Nawas, Alexander Hofmann, Volker Mailänder and the group BiomaTiCS.
