Elemental composition of the Amazonian aerosol coarse mode – Contrasting rain forest background vs. African dust and marine aerosol influenced states

The Amazonian aerosol coarse mode in a size range between 1 – 10 µm, plays an important role for the rain forest biogeochemical and hydrological cycling as well as for its ecology. Based on manifold aerosol sources, the coarse particles show highly complex and diverse particle mixtures, what needs to be understood in more detail. Therefore, we use a broad spectrum of complementary techniques, including energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, to characterize the elemental composition and mixing state of single aerosol particles and can finally create a comprehensive overview of the forest background aerosol population.
